Good morning, it is 2 days before Thanksgiving and my mother’s landlord has turned her power off for the past 24 hours. We’re on our way to file an emergency suit, but I want to just remind those that are privileged to not be experiencing this - that this is STILL HAPPENING.
Because most evictions and housing court cases can’t proceed until the end of the year, landlords are trying to intimidate and harass tenants by any means necessary, regardless of legality. Many tenants are unaware of how they can fight back, and landlords regularly prey on this.
My mother is severely immunocompromised and relies on nebulizer treatments for her respiratory issues. Throughout this pandemic her landlord has:
- followed her around unmasked
- sent the police to give the covid-positive porter to inspect the apartment
- shut the lights off
give the covid-positive porter access to inspect*
This is just a *glimpse* at the harassment that tenants are facing. This is in the Bronx, which currently bears the brunt of the housing crisis and that’s why landlords are so emboldened to act - our housing court system can’t even handle all the abuses.
The @NYCCouncil knows this is a problem, they’ve published a report on it. They knew it was a crisis before the pandemic - and with the widespread unemployment we’re facing here - it’s about to get worse.

But now, it can even prove fatal. Forcing tenants to forgo medical needs.
But admittedly, the Council is limited in what they can do. We need the state (&fed) government to intervene. But @NYGovCuomo is too busy collecting Emmy’s for his “performance.” While my mother has to risk her life walking into a courthouse for an illegal utility cutoff.
