The whole K-Pop industry really unveils human abysses I didn’t know were possible. With every passing day on K-Pop Stan twitter my disgust is growing. - a long thread because I have to get it out of my system. /1
Obviously starting with the companies that exploit teenagers & create this unattainable idol standard that only works thanks to eating disorders, anxiety, depression & generally giving up a normal life, e.g. dating.
I don’t think anyone is surprised by the high suicide rates. /2
But even worse are the fandoms. I‘m honestly concerned for both these kids and adults (not sure which is worse, I guess adults) that are unhealthy obsessed with idols and live through their achievements instead of living their own life. /3
A big part of fandoms are akgaes (fans that only like 1 member of a group and go out of their way to hate the others, spread rumours about them to possibly ruin their career etc.) and there are of course sasaengs (actual stalkers) /4
Fans don’t sleep/shower and skip school to give their idols a meaningless record they then use to fight other fandoms that were less successful in ruining their own lives for a stranger. They literally collect MILLIONS of dollars to plaster Korean train stations with posters /5
& give presents like designer bags to uhm... millionaires?? Rn Lisa‘s & Jennie‘s birthday funds combine to about 1mio USD. Yeah they do charity work as well & ofc people can use their money however they want to. However I just can’t help but feel weirded out by this behaviour. /6
The bigger the fandom the more gross people are in it ofc. BTS’ fandom have a cult-like behaviour and treat these men like untouchable gods. In fact to them no one besides BTS deserves any praise or achievements. It‘s at the point where journalists are regularly shut down if /7
they even attempt to criticise them & have to fear backlash including death threats. The same for pretty much everyone that work with big groups like BTS & BP - if you do/say smth that the fandom doesn’t like you should be prepared to get attacked (including family/friends) /8
Social issues like cultural appropriation is a regular topic in K-Pop but instead of being actually concerned about it, fans use it to fight other fans. Like yeahh my idol was racist but do you remember your idol was even more racist a few months ago?! Lmaoo /9
To me the worst part is probably how women are treated. Constant slut shaming, downgrading and literal abuse.
Men in their 30s watching fancams of 15 y/o girls in their short skirts. The more baby-like and clean the image the worse the sexualisation of these children. /10
At the same time women that are mature and confident, show off their body or dare to stand up for women’s rights are ugly, dirty hags. They should just shut up and look pretty. It makes me sick fr. /11
And we all know that there is a huge problem with yellow fever & fetishisation of Asians. Social Media posts of East Asian looking people are plastered with comparisons „omg you look like Idol X, marry me 😍“ (without them having any similarities except for being East Asian) /12
This is just a very short summary of this hellish industry, it’s much worse. The funny thing is, I always had this repulsion when it came to K-pop fans because they felt „weird“, that’s why I used to be a casual listener without getting involved in any fandom /13
The fact that I was right all along & in reality, the fans are even worse than what I imagined back then lmaoo.
And yes there are great things about K-pop too, otherwise it wouldn’t be so popular. But personally I wanna go back to just being a casual listener.
It’s just that BP..
