I didn't know when I shouted "God when" as this cute young couple walked into my office for ANC registeration...

We all laughed and I encouraged the husband to keep supporting his lovely wife...

It was all smiles until the routine ANC results came out...WAHALA!

#OdogwuTales
The husband stepped out to answer a call and it was just me and the woman.

I was lost for words, like how do I tell this beautiful young woman that she is "HIV Positive" but I had to...

She was still pressing her phone and smiling sheepishly when I broke the news...she froze 😲
She's not aware, the husband is not aware...so I had to send for a confirmatory test and it came out positive.

"I am finished...Jesus what have i done to myself" she cried,I tried to console and counsel her, telling her, your main concern now should be your "UNBORN CHILD!"
Me: Madam you know your unborn child shouldn't suffer for this, we need to make sure he/she comes out negative...

Woman: What do I do?

Me: Oya let's talk briefly about "Prevention Of Mother To Child Transmission Of HIV/AIDS" also known as "PMTCT"
Introduction...

HIV can be transmitted from an HIV-postive woman to her child through the following means
1. During pregnancy
2. During delivery
3. During breastfeeding

The ability to stop the transfer from mother to child is simply known as PMTCT
• How To Prevent HIV Transmission During Pregancy

- Pregnant women should be tested for HIV as early as possible. If positive, the next thing is to be started on ARV (HIV/AIDS Drugs)

- They reduce viral load and reduces the chances of you infecting your unborn child
• How To Prevent HIV Transmission During Delivery

- For HIV positive mother's who didn't start ARV on time and their viral load is still high, delivering via Ceasarian section(C/S) is the best way to prevent transmission

- But if viral load is low, vaginal delivery is very safe
• How To Prevent HIV Transmission During Breastfeeding

- Babies born to HIV positive mother's are started on ARV(HIV/AIDS) drugs for 4-6wks

- Mothers are also advised to continue taking theirs and child should be breastfed for 6months appropriately by W.H.O

- The new born...
Baby should first be tested at birth for HIV, again after 1-2 months and finally at 4-6months of life.

The child can only be said to be HIV positive if 2 positive results are gotten from 2 diff blood samples

HIV/AIDS is no death sentence, just take your drugs and you will be OK
The world has evolved, ARVs are doing wonders and HIV/AIDS are no longer "Death Sentences"

But preventing the spread of HIV remains the main thing and this could be achieved by using the acronym "ABCDE"

• A- Abstain totally from sex
• B- Be faithful...praying your partner is
•C- Condom use...cheap and available

•D- Don't do drugs...sharing needles for drugs is dangerous

•E- Educate yourself...Be empowered and you can do that by following this handle for daily health threads!

Be careful...5min raw sex can give you HIV and other STDs!!!
