I personally think The RID Decepticons have more story potential than the regular combaticons.
Because "military Decepticons" on it's own isn't really that distinct from regular Decepticons
But the Commandos are Autobots and their leader is a dark reflection of Optimus Prime
The group as a whole utilises both the Combaticons and Nemesis Prime and makes them more interesting by fusing the ideas together.
The group fills all the same combaticon roles but with the added story of being evil Autobots on top of that
Scourge is a constant reminder that Optimus failed to save them 6 Autobots lost themselves in Megatron's reprogramming and Optimus couldn't do anything about, and now they all hate him and don't want his help.
The Commandos could fill in for the Combaticons, but the Combaticons couldn't fill in for the Commandos.
Same with Scourge and Nemesis, Scourge fills the role of Nemesis Prime, but Nemesis could never fill the role of Scourge.
There's just an extra dimension to them that their more famous counterparts don't have

Simply by existing in the story they add in character drama for Optimus and open a discussion about morality and free will. That's just built in to all 6 of them by being reprogrammed Autobots
This probably isn't making any sense.
I'm not great with words
