In an ideal world where everyone abides these simple principles, ratings would universally be a system that makes the most amount of sense. But that's not the case here. Most people would think this is too strict or tedious for their tastes. And I think that's alright. https://twitter.com/RainAfterDark/status/1331181959091953664
You might find this thread really weird coming from someone who doesn't use rating systems anymore. I've personally come to the conclusion that media cannot be laid out on a single axis of good vs bad. There's more nuance and complexity to experiencing stories even words-
sometimes can't fully express. What I'm trying to accomplish here is to achieve a common ground regarding numerical ratings vs words being a better way of expressing thoughts. At the end of the day they're only tools. If you find something as systematic as the rating system I-
presented above or an entire essay of words, I don't think it really matters. Just as how experiencing stories are interpretative, so is the critique of it. Rather than being reductive about opinions, maybe we should think of them as insights, as pieces to see the bigger picture.
And when you don't have enough pieces to fill in the holes, you can always ask for more. At least, I would, if you asked me.
