A THREAD ON THE COSTS OF DIRECT HOUSING BUILD IN DUBLIN CITY (bear with me...).
Last week the @IrishTimes ran an article effectively indicating that local councils can build social housing at half the cost of private developers.
Last week the @IrishTimes ran an article effectively indicating that local councils can build social housing at half the cost of private developers.
The piece generated much general sentiment along the lines of "I knew it!", "I told you so..." etc. The conclusion of the entire argument hinged on a figure of €181,500 for Direct Builds in DCC in 2019 which looked way off base to me based on everything we've seen recently.
So I invited some of our journalists/celebrity economists to do a little public service by analysing that number but they were all busy washing their hair. So I did the leg work on the analysis myself and (surprise, surprise) here is the exact make-up of the €181,500:
The conclusion literally jumps out at you - the 2019 figure is skewed by the inclusion of Priory Hall refurbishment work. These are not new units, why are they even included?? Even a cursory glance at the 2019 figures in the PQ response indicates that 2019 is off for Dublin
So in conclusion:
(1) Will the @IrishTimes withdraw/correct their article from last week?
(2) Will the Dept of Housing confirm that the 2019 Dublin figure given in their PQ response is skewed?
(3) What is @EOBroin's view now on the data given to him?
