Hot on the heels of #LivingWageWeek, we’d like to share the results of a recent research exercise we conducted to look at the economic impact of choosing to shop with us. We adapted LM3 methodology from the @NEF, which is used to show how money circulates round a local economy.
Focusing on our Govanhill shop, we looked at the income and expenditure to see what we spent on and who we spent with - is it a business based in Glasgow, or Scotland? If not, is it part of the Progressive Economy, a business in some way like ours?
Then we asked our suppliers and staff to share the same information - based on those three categories, Glasgow, Scotland or Progressive Economy, where does the money go? Based on that we were able to calculate what happens to the money our customer spend with us.
Using the LM3 methodology, we calculated that £1 spent in our Govanhill shop is worth £1.92 to #Glasgow’s Economy, or £2.36 to the Scottish economy, or £2.87 to the Scottish and Progressive Economies.
There’s more nuance than can be fitted into a series of tweets, so we’ve put together this guide to how we calculated these figures http://shorturl.at/jprDI , including a comparison with conventional supermarkets (spoiler: more money stays local when you don’t shop with them).
One more thing to finish this thread - we’d like to thank @RealFarming and @CoventryCAWR for supporting our Impact Project, as well as our staff and suppliers for taking part in the surveys.
