Why It Helps to Stop Before Deciding.

In 2013, 398 died crossing the road. A further 5,500 were seriously injured (UK).

There were many reasons, but three highlighted a weakness we have when making decisions.

Here is a thread on the power of the pause 👇🧵
1. The problem

Crossing the road has become such a frequent behaviour, we just do it automatically.

This unconscious - spontaneous behaviour is an indication of our system one thinking at work.

We make fast and rapid decisions based on a previously learned behaviour.
2. The outcome

In many instances' severe injury

In some instances' death
3.

Further analysis reveals three reasons drive 80% of the injuries and deaths...

• A failure to look properly

• The pedestrian was in a hurry

• The pedestrian failed to judge the car's speed or direction

Each reason indicates a failure in judgement.
4. The solution

We need to break the flow of the instinctive system one taking control.

We need a prompt to help us engage system two

We need the power of a pause
5.

Pausing is hard.

Making big or important choices means you should be pulling on the strength and character of system two.

But we are lazy, we don’t like thinking.

So, every given time we’re faced with a choice – we will opt to take the simple path - System one
6.
Pausing gives us potential access to system two thinking.

It means we:

• Think logically
• Take our time
• Consider the pro’s and con’s

As a result, we make better judgments.
7. Concluding thoughts

The power of a pause is that it helps you find an alternative way of deciding.

It will improve your ability to make better decisions.

It might just prevent severe injury or death, the next time you cross the road too.
