ok ok so remember when i said parts 1-3 and 4-6 feel like totally different series? well it's supposed to be like that and here's why! (a thread)
the first main difference is what connects the parts to each other. parts 1-3 are connected through dio (and the consequences of his actions) and all three jojos have a collective goal of defeating the vampires. parts 4-6 are connected through the theme of fate/destiny.
while this theme is more-so implied in diu, it's explicity shown in 5 with diavolo and the rolling stones, and a puccis main motives part 6.
now y'all might try to say that this isn't true because stone ocean also has a lot to do with dio but that's because all six parts so far are still connected, just kinda broken up a bit. i think of it like 1-3 is the original, 4-6 is the sequel, and 7/8(/9?) is like a spin off?
the connection to dio in part 6 serves to wrap up the story as a whole, but it's still independent enough that it stands on its own.
the second main difference is visuals. we see this A LOT with the art style as the characters go from built as FUCK to wayyyy skinnier. yes this is mostly just because of araki's art style changing but it still serves as a sort of separation between parts.
we also see this with the openings. parts 1-3 all having rlly intense, energetic 3D ops while 4 and 5 are a bit more playful and stick to 2D animation.
you might argue that this isn't intentional but even if it's not, it still creates a visual difference between 1-3 and 4-6 and gives them a totally different feel.
the third main difference is the time gaps. 1-3 are each 50 years apart and each jojo is the grandson of the previous jojo whereas 4-6 are much closer in time and all the jojos are the children of jojos 1-3 (josuke and joseph, giorno and jonathan, jolyne and jotaro)
YES I SAID JONATHAN ITS HIS FUCKING BODY I DONT CARE
anyways that part kinda isn't that important but i just thought i'd mention it because it still separates the parts idfk can y'all tell i'm getting tired of writing this 😐
ok yeah so basically that's why parts 1-3 and 4-6 are so different because 1-3 is like jojo gen 1 and 4-6 is jojo gen 2 FUCK
arghhhh "ok but what about stands?" you ask, while i bash my head into the wall. the reason part 3 uses stands like 4-6 instead of hamon like 1/2 is because part 3 (and specifically jotaro) serves as the bridge between gen 1 and gen 2.
now this gives us a tonnnnnn of insight into his character because we are able to better understand the full extent of the burden that was placed on him at the beginning of sdc.
he had to not only resolve the 100 year old unfinished business of the jojos before him, but also more or less raise the next generation of jojos who came after him.
and finally, this brings us to dad jotaro. essentially he had to decide between his role as a JOJO or his role as a FATHER. of course jotaro loved jolyne. he always did. but as basically the head jojo, he had to choose that job over her. bye i'm gonna cry
