I want to say something because a lot of people let this idea slide under the radar in terms of awful and harmful ideals, and that& #39;s the opinion "people under the age of 20 are worthless because of their lack of experience, so they don& #39;t count as people and aren& #39;t valid"
Now there is some level of truth, even though it& #39;s greatly exaggerated. Kids and teens do have less experience than grown adults and don& #39;t understand some things as much, and they don& #39;t understand their emotions as well and can& #39;t control them as much.
However, that doesn& #39;t mean they aren& #39;t real people yet. It just means that they& #39;re more prone to making mistakes and have more to learn, and everyone still learns and makes mistakes to a degree.
I also hate when they say "they don& #39;t know ANYTHING". It& #39;s a great exaggeration. They may not be as wise as an elder, middle aged person, or even someone in their 20s, but everyone does have experience and knowledge to a degree.
Finally, I want to talk about how damaging saying this to teens is, and I know this from experience. When I was around 14-16, I heard this kind of shit a lot, from my family, to YouTubers I watched like Someguy827, to even politicians, particularly ones "owning the libs"
Always hearing that I didn& #39;t know anything and that I wasn& #39;t valid and had no right to have a say in things because of my age REALLY affected my self esteem. It added to my depression and self hatred, because I felt so unimportant and useless.
Now that I& #39;m in my 20s and I& #39;m a "valid" person..... I still don& #39;t feel better, in fact I feel marginally worse. I often times feel as if I& #39;m not valid and worthy of respect, and lots of times I wonder how my older family could even love me because I& #39;m still younger.
So to end this thread, stop saying this, especially directly to teens. I got a lot of times the message is "be willing to learn more about life", but don& #39;t exaggerate it. Talk instead about how instead of knowing nothing, how they do have experience but still have more to learn
Or how it& #39;s okay to make mistakes and act irrationally out of emotions sometimes, because they& #39;re learning, and overall they& #39;re still valid people.
