to understand 808s, the background must be known. Kanye’s mother, Donda West, tragically passed away November 10, 2007.

This was the one who knew Kanye the best, the one Kanye loved more than anything in the world.

Months later, Kanye’s on again-off again ex-fiancee Alexis Phifer & he finally called off the engagement entirely. This combined with Kanye’s mother passing away sent Kanye into emotional turmoil.

Kanye West then set out to use this emotion to create a new sound. Something that was different from the norm. He seeked out T-Pain & upcoming star Kid Cudi for help with writing & the use of autotune.

On release, critics did not heavily favor it.

However, it turned out to be a massive success, sparking the hit “Heartless” and influencing an entire generation, with stars such as Drake, Lil Uzi Vert, Juice Wrld, and Frank Ocean finding influence from it.
