ya'll actually, Eret adopting Fundy is one of the most interesting places the lore can go when it comes to Fundy's family dynamic. (thread)
Eret, first of all, as the renowned "traitor" has a sturdy foothold in a redemption arc. He gives Fundy a father figure and can make up for his past mistakes and betrayals. Eret also grows in his selflessness, learning to focus on others rather than himself.
Fundy, now having the first major parental figure in a while has someone who genuinely wants him (not like a mother who abandoned him at 9, and a father who neglected him until he died, and a grandfather that--while trying, doesn't really know how best to handle his grandson)
Now consider the ANGST possibilities and plotlines when it comes to GHOSTBUR. GHOSTBUR probably doesn't even remember Eret's betrayal (it wasn't a positive element in Alivebur's life). He watches his son get adopted by a strange man who was said to be previous king of the SMP.
There's some part of Ghostbur that holds a deep resentment. He isn't sure why. He gets so cold watching Eret, and especially jealous when he's with Fundy. Ghostbur feels guilty, why doesn't Fundy want to be around HIM? His real father? But wait, he isn't real anymore is he...?
As much as Ghostbur reaches out to Fundy, Fundy has a new home now. They'll never be able to repair that broken, destroyed familial relationship. Ghostbur is dead, Alivebur didn't care, and Fundy has someone who will be better to him now.
Philza knows this, Philza tries to tell Ghostbur that there wasn't anything he could've done. That this was inevitable. That both Ghostbur and Fundy needed to move on. It hurts, Philza tries to give Ghostbur comfort, but it's cold. It's so so cold.
Ghostbur watches Fundy and Eret from a distance as they build their house, live in peace together, bond, grow, watching FUNDY grow, something he never appreciated before. He's becoming so much more mature now, isn't he?
And that inkling, of Eret's past, is quietly simmering in the back of Ghostbur's head.

The jealousy, the resentment, the *anger*, what was it he was so ANGRY about?

Why wasn't he a better father, why isn't it HIM there with HIS son?
Ghostbur watches them with Phil from a distance.

A voice rings in his ear, ever so quietly as he sees Fundy with a happier family than what he ever provided.

"It was never meant to be." (end thread)
