In 2010 I wrote this for a Media Writing class and wanted to share it. Ten years have gone by and much of what I wrote still holds true. Enjoy!...
It's one of the few things we're known for next to chicken wings, a depressing sports history, and Niagara Falls, but when it comes to this time of the year in Buffalo, Simon and Garfunkel's hit "A Hazy Shade of Winter" says it best.
"Look around, leaves are brown, and the sky is a hazy shade of winter."
December 21st marks the beginning of the winter solstice which means the official start of the winter season. Of course, Buffalo did not exist back then when they decided this day to be the start of winter otherwise they would have moved it to about the middle of November.
Still for us in Buffalo, this winter season holds nothing too surprising. We have grown accustom to the cold winds, ice, and snow. If you really don't like it, do what the birds do, fly south. You may even encounter other Western New Yorkers who have done the same thing.
And with Mighty Taco now shipping burritos all over the United States, you won't have to be without some of the fine Buffalo cuisine you've grown accustom to.
If going away for the winter is not an option, we do have many ways of conquering the elements. Some of the more obvious would be snow shovels, snow blowers, snow brushes, ice scrapers, snow plows, rock salt, and indoor heating.
Two of my personal favorites are 4x4 vehicles, and restaurants that deliver.
As we brave the weather, we do find time to have fun. Hockey season is in full swing, there's sledding, skiing, plenty of snow to build a snowman, and various winter festivals throughout the area. And speaking of snow, who doesn't dream of a white Christmas?
So here it is again, winter. Seems like only a few months ago we got over it, yet I do believe that Buffalo would not be the same without it. So let us all raise a glass and welcome back our friend Old Man Winter. Cheers.
