ok so mahiru grew up in a pretty neglectful home,, her mother was barely around because she was overseas as a famous war photographer. her father on the other hand was a deadbeat drunkie who never picked up after himself, never cared for mahiru, never really acknowledged her.
so of course, mahiru had to learn how to do things on her own. she cared for herself, cooked for herself, cleaned the house by herself,,,she basically raised herself.
her school life was pretty eh
she went to middle school with her best friend sato, while she had a bully; natsumi kuzuryu. natsumi harassed and bullied her because she was jealous of mahirus photography skill.

moving on to high school; mahiru, you guessed it, was still getting bullied by natsumi. mahiru never really understood her jealousy because she was always really insecure about herself and her talent. sato one day took it upon herself to end the harassment, and fought natsumi.
what happened during the fight you might ask?? sato murdered natsumi. mahiru found out about this and decided to cover it up that sato was the killer because she didnt want her best friend to get hurt. so mahiru accidentally became an accomplice for the murder of natsumi kuzuryu.
fuyuhiko; natsumis older brother duh,, found out and went bing bam beep bop and murdered sato.
mahiru was sad and depressed and weewoo
then we move on to the events of sdr2.

her introduction comes off a little harsh, but thats just because she has high expectations for men because she doesnt want them to end up like her no good dad.
now mahiru really cared about everyone on the island. she was the only one who took the time to understand and be kind to hiyoko. mahiru also,,,had a little baby crush on hajime. I THINK ITS THE CUTEST THING EVER
mahiru talks about her past, not a lot but she does, in her free time events. she talks about her mom mostly and how she idolizes her.
when imposter dies, obviously she was very sad

when that happened, she just wanted to gather around everyone involved and talk it out rather than fighting or something. fuyuhiko never wanted mahiru hurt, but peko took it the wrong way and went bing bam beep bop and killed her.
now im gonna talk about mahirus insecurities and stuff like that
she was always really super insecure about herself and her talent.
she thought photography wasnt really a good enough talent to be like considered decent.

she really liked taking pictures of people smiling because it made her feel better seeing people happy since she grew up in a genuinely sad place.
