Moon and the Unconscious
The Moon is one of the vital points in the chart, because it is one of the lights. What does it mean for a planet to be a light though. Its often said that the Moon has no light of its own, and reflects the light of the Sun. However this is not entirely true.
Everything in space has its own light. According to Planck’s Law, it tells us the amount of energy an object emits at given wavelengths, depending on the temperature of a planet. For a planet to emit 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 light, it must get real hot.
Because the Sun is already extremely hot, it is evident that it can create its own light. However, the Moon is extremely cold, and at this temperature point, the Moon appears to not be emitting any 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 light.
However the Moon does emit light, but it is not detectable by the Human Eye, because it is deep in the infrared spectrum, which is a wavelength of energy our eyes cannot detect. Because the Sun is already so hot, and the Moon reflects the light of the Sun, it is able to shine
The light of the Sun, but its own emissions are blocked and outweighed by the light of the Sun. I think its important to shift the narrative of the Moon to understanding the fact that it does not emit any 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 light of its own. Now what does this mean Astrologically?
The Moon has the ability to influence us in ways we don’t necessarily see or understand. However, this is the same with all celestial bodies in the sky: they all do not have their own light and reflect the light of the Sun. So what makes the Moon different?
The Moon is the Earth’s satellite and thus influences Earth a lot more, as it is the only body in the Solar System that actually revolves around Earth. Because it is so close, it takes the light of the Sun and reflects it directly onto Earth, causing Earth to light up in the dark
I think one of the important parts of the Moon is that it is the receptive principle, but also the reflective principle. Its visible luminance is dependent on how much light it takes from the Sun, and it doesn’t have much control of how much light it is taking.
This is analogous to the same way, as children, we don’t have control of our environment, of our minds, and the light, as a metaphor for information, intellect, and cognizance, and what we are able to absorb. We are sponges and we absorb.
However, the environment and information we absorb as a kid is then internalized into behavioral traits and then reflected back outwards towards the world: we define this as projection. We are quite literally “creatures of habit”
And the Moon is habitual in nature: it takes 27.3 days to revolve around the Earth, and in this time frame, it dictates the consistent push and pull of the tides. The Moon’s gravity effects the water on Earth, causing it to bulge and be pulled towards Earth.
As the oceans are pulled towards the side of the Earth that the Moon is facing, who is say that the people, who are made up of 70% water, not affect by this repetitive push and pull of water on Earth by the Moon.
When talking about repetitiveness and cycles with the Moon, it’s very important to discuss its orbit and the North and South Node. The North and South nodes are mathematical points in the sky where the Ecliptic, apparent path of the Sun, and the orbit of the Moon intersect
And at these two points where they intersect define the North and South Node. The Moon’s orbit, compared to the Ecliptic, has a mean difference of 5.145º, meaning that the Moon will naturally move almost diagonal in comparison to the Ecliptic.
Here’s a visual of the Moon orbiting around Earth.

Now 5.145º may not seem like a lot of degree’s numerically, but we’re talking about 5º of space, which is a huge chunk of space. The Moon is constantly in an ascending and descending motion because of this difference in
axial tilt between the Ecliptic and the Moon’s orbit. When the Moon gets to the North Node, it starts to ascend in latitude, above the Ecliptic, and when it gets to the South Node, it starts to descend in latitude, and this repetitive cycle happens every month
This can be representative of the nature of our emotions and well being during a given period of time, where we go through phases of ascension and decision in the qualitative nature of our moods. This is why the Moon is exalted in Taurus and the North Node in Gemini
If the North Node is in Gemini, and the Moon in Taurus, the Moon is moving towards a state of increase, and going upwards, which is the nature of Exaltation, according to 9th Century Astrologer Abu Ma’shar. It is from the Moon’s orbit that we get the North and South Node’s
significations of places of increase, with the North, and places of decrease with the South Node: getting high and lower in latitude. However, we also see this cyclical nature of increase and decrease with the Phases of the Moon.
The Moon starts out with no light at the New Moon, and then starts to wax and increase in light, eventually getting to a Full Moon once it is opposite the Sun. If the Sun is representative of the mind, our consciousness, and intellect
and the Moon is reflective of our unconscious and cyclical nature of our consciousness, the unconscious: it places it in direct opposition during the Full Moon and brings the unconscious behaviors to be fully realized and public to view. The Moon is at its brightest when Full
and as a result, there can be a heightened awareness of the two components that make up the mind: how the conscious is influenced by the unconscious and the unconscious influences consciousness.
The nature of the Moon is repetitive, outlined through the Nodes, the tides, it’s phases, and it’s fast motion around the Earth, but I think it’s important to address Eclipses and the Moon, and the importance of both.
To understand the importance of Eclipses, we have to understand how Eclipses are formed. This is when the Sun and the Moon meet up at conjoin either of the Nodes, and if they are both conjoined one node, it is a Solar Eclipse, as the Moon blocks the light of the Sun, and if each
luminary conjoins one node each: it is a Lunar Eclipse. With a Solar Eclipse, because the Moon and Sun are visually equal in size, which also gives further implications that the Sun and Moon are equal in power, the Moon cuts off the light of the Sun from Earth, temporarily
causing parts the Earth to be covered in darkness. This is monumental because if our consciousness, our light, is being cut off by the principle of the unconscious: it leaves all that is hidden and buried beneath the surface of unconscious to temporarily rise to the surface and
let itself be known. Solar Eclipses can be a time where, because of such sudden interruption of sunlight, you are able to see unconsciousness much more abruptly, than you would be able to during a regular New Moon, because the Moon is actually not coming to conjoin the Sun in
latitude every month: it conjoins in longitude, meaning the Moon will actually be right below or above the Sun, but will not be exactly conjoined in latitude to the Sun. This is when Solar Eclipses happen, when both luminaries are conjoined to the Nodes.
When we take a look at the opposite, in order for the Moon to receive the luminance of the Sun, the light of the Sun must be able to reach the Moon, but when the Sun and Moon opposite and both are conjoined to the Nodes, we get a Lunar Eclipse, and what happens here is the Earth
is coming between the Sun and Moon, cutting off the light from reaching the Moon. If you’ve ever watched a Lunar Eclipse in real time, you’ll notice that the Moon actually starts to wane for the entire time it leads up to the peak of the Eclipse, where the Moon turns red, and
this can be significant of the unconscious being fully disconnect and separate from consciousness, in a way that you are able to distinguish the difference between both, and seeing the difference between consciousness and the unconscious can be quite stark. It’s almost like
removing a layer of frosting off a cupcake: the pretty decorations that have been layer on top of the unconscious are now visible in display and it is quite evident that something beneath the surface is now emerging to become independently visible. Eclipses involve the Moon
directly, and they are pivotal moments throughout the year where the unconscious becomes much abrupt and predominates over consciousness, which is the Sun. The Moon is nature can bring complacency in rhythm, and can leave us forgetting how these frequent cyclical, unconscious,
cycles and habits tend to be the root of our consciousness and world view. To honor the Moon, we must look deep inside ourselves and be willing to explore the root of what habits are buried deep inside of us that inform our current moods, habits, and perception of reality.
The Moon is a Luminary, and it is the light, and while the Sun may be more overtly visible: the Moon does not need to be overt to have strength, influence, and impactful.
