1) Acknowledging the logistical challenge ahead, Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Monday tapped the former head of the Canadian Armed Forces, retired Gen. Rick Hillier, to oversee the rollout of #COVID19 vaccines in the province next year. Quebec has yet to announce a similar plan.
2) If Quebec’s experience with mass vaccination is any indication, the province has its work cut out for it. The government was initially slow to secure enough supply of the seasonal flu vaccine this year, severely underestimating the demand for the shots.
3) During the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic, some Quebecers had to wait hours to get their shots in shopping malls. Given that the #COVID19 vaccine will likely require two shots spaced some time apart, and that masks and social distancing must be maintained, what is Quebec’s plan?
4) Currently, three #COVID19 vaccines have shown promising results in late-stage trials, with drugmaker AstraZeneca announcing on Monday that its product is relatively cheap and does not have to be stored at super-cold temperatures. Ottawa has agreed to purchase 20 million doses.
5) The federal government has also struck agreements with Pfizer and Moderna to acquire their vaccines as well. Ottawa is in the process of purchasing 100 new freezers to help store those vaccines when they become available. Alberta is shopping for freezers. What about Quebec?
6) On Nov. 18, Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott revealed that her province will likely receive 1.6 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 800,000 of the Moderna between January and March. In Quebec, Health Minister Christian Dubé has yet to offer any precise details.
7) Mass vaccination will require a large-scale publicity campaign to combat vaccine hesitancy and anti-vaxxers. Quebec must start work immediately on such a campaign, while delivering the message that wearing masks and socially distancing will be mandatory for months to come.
8) Meanwhile, Quebec declared 13 more #COVID19 fatalities Monday to a death toll that unfortunately is likely to cross the 7,000 threshold early next month. Montreal, for its part, claimed three of those fatalities, raising its death toll to 3,595. See the chart below.
9) The province’s total number of #COVID19 outbreaks jumped by 14 to 1,249 Monday, including eight more in daycares (80), two more in health-care institutions ( 223, mostly in eldercare), one more in schools (394) and nine more in the workplace (521).
10) Although #COVID19 hospitalizations dipped by eight to 634 Monday, the total number is still high and likely to rise over time. That’s because Quebec is still posting between 1,100 and 1,200 new cases a day. End of thread. Stay safe, everyone.
