Have I shared my theory that the exact moment Justin Timberlake lost the public was on the song Suit & Tie when he uttered the lyric 'Stop, let me get a good look at it
Ooh so thick, now I know why they call it a fatty'?
Despite it being an excellent song (easily 1 of the best on the 20:20 experience. Arguably 1 of the only good ones), it rang false. He clearly wasn't talking about Jessica Biel (who is gorgeous, but not thicc) and with the realisation, years of 'Urban' cosplay caught up with him.
While his contemporaries were getting into the nitty gritty of their personal lives, airing their dirty laundry, and being vulnerable, here was a man who had seemingly given us little of himself, while riding the wave of more innovative Black artists.
And when he had shared the intimate details of his life, it seemed only to disparage women he was close to or ostensibly idolised. It was all over from that point.
Just want to add that the dissonance is made all the worse by the fact that the featured artist is Jay-Z. Jay is constantly making reference to Beyoncé, such that even when he doesn't explicitly call her name, it feels specific to her.
