8 Key Highlights from United’s 1-0 Win over West Brom in the Premier League: a thread.
1. Triangles: Overloading and Creating Space

MUN construct triangles across the pitch in their build up play to formulate attacks.

A. Attempt to get the ball forward to the destination player — Telles to cross.

B. Create space for players to run into — AWB holding width.
2. Crosses.

MUN’s attacking dynamism has been improving by creating different goal scoring opportunities — from both set pieces and open play.

19/20 in the PL: 10.3 crosses on average.
20/21 in the PL: 10.6 crosses on average.

We saw that against EVE as well. Improvement.
3. Players in the box.

Bruno sends a perfectly weighted through pass to get in behind WBA’s defence followed by a Martial cutback.

Nice to see the fluidity in exchanging Rashford and Martial’s positions — but ultimately it goes wide. Too little players in the box.
4. Through Ball.

Martial asks for the ball here. His position is excellent, tucked in between the two CB’s. Should be doing it more.

B. Matic with a lofted through ball.

C. Rashford again.

Again: dynamism in attack against passive teams. Good signs.
5. Transition.

A. Maguire intercepts the ball, drives forward into space & passes to Rashford.

B. Rashford notices the space left behind in the box Bruno can run into. This was a result of Martial’s good positioning in the centre.

C. Quick pass to Martial. Poor finish.
6. Defending Crosses.

B. Lindelof fails to win the aerial duel — AWB gets dragged at an attempt to win the ball/spillover.
C. WBA striker has a clear shot on goal.
D. Fantastic save by De Gea.

MUN need to improve their defensive organisation & communication here.
7. Poor finishing.

Great pass by Bruno here, quietly intercepted — Rashford’s shot is saved here. Good save, but poor finish.

Notice Martial’s frustration asking for the ball, it’s good to see that hunger, although he had a suboptimal game.

We had 17 shots — 7 on target.
8. De Gea.

This was a great save by De Gea — coming off his lines: something he rarely does. A good sign of the command and confidence he has now.
