Here’s a photo tour of my favorite street in West Philly: 45th Street between Baltimore and Walnut.

We start at Baltimore with this apartment building that seems tacked onto what used to be a couple of townhomes. Or were townhome facades tacked onto an apartment building?
Across the street is a beautiful line of rowhomes, built in West Philadelphia’s decorative style. All are set back and set above 45th Street, with great sunrooms and small front gardens.
At the eastern side of the intersection with Osage, these two very different multifamily buildings face each other.

At the NE corner, these modernist townhomes. At the SE corner, this West Philly Dark Ages Revival apartment building.

These two styles will appear again!
45th is a small-scale residential retail street of the type you see almost nowhere in this country.

Midblock, there is a small cafe, and they use the adjacent porch as outdoor seating. Just beyond at the the corner with Pine is a dry cleaner.
The other four corners of Pine show three styles of medium-density housing.

At the NW corner, this big column and porch style that reminds me of British colonial architecture. At the NE corner, a very functional light brick complex. At the SE corner, more Dark Ages Revival.
At the intersection with Spruce is a unique modernist townhome development called University Mews.

@IngaSaffron has written all about it here: https://www.inquirer.com/philly/columnists/inga_saffron/redefining-what-a-rowhouse-could-be-in-1962-20170728.html
The intersection of Spruce is the top of Spruce Hill, and you can get a great view of the UPenn and HUP complex.

There’s also Don Barriga, our go-to Mexican restaurant, and this nifty little turret.
A contemporary multi-family development has been slipped into this infill parcel on the next block. I’m not sure why it was set back though...
Finally the intersection with Walnut, where 45th demonstrates a bit of West Philadelphia’s diversity.

After a block with Ethiopian, Lebanese, and Argentinian restaurants, on the north side of the intersection there is a Chinese Christian church opposite a mosque.
