The puritanical practice of political purity seems to have insidiously infiltrated all kinds of movements. Instead of engaging with issues & focussing on material issues, convos are hijacked by sniping & complaining that the wrong media org printed it or an imperfect person.
Women, our political systems were built by men. Currently neither left nor right is an ally to women. However, the left has explicitly rejected women’s rights in law. The left media will not print our point of view & even actively attack women eg. Sneddon, RNZ, Spinoff.
It is infuriating that whenever a woman posts an article, often comments/convo revolve around why the news org is right wing & we shouldn’t listen or share. Show me a leftist publication printing helpful articles & I’ll gladly share it, but we have to make do with what we’ve got.
I no longer have any allegiance to left or right. My allegiance is to women. I will work with people I disagree with on other things if it benefits women’s rights.
I’m actively engaging with people from all over the political spectrum currently & it’s such a waste of time & energy to have to argue who is “bad” & who is “good” when we are trying to prevent misogynistic laws & policy. The truth is most people are neither bad nor good.
I would really like it if we could spend more time focussing on the issues and how we can create solutions for women than bickering about political purity.
We are all entitled to our political opinions & of course they inform how we approach certain issues. However, in conversations & settings supposed to be dedicated to women’s rights & issues it is derailment to force discussion into personal pontification about a person/org.
I’m just fed up when we have many women busting a gut to fight for women and we can’t even have a productive discussion about issues that could be helpful to our work.
Whinge over.
