House Of Balloons deconstruction, A Thread:

First off this is my favorite mixtape of all time and top 5 favorite project OAT by my favorite artist of all time, The Weeknd. This project really introduced me to the real Abel and his best work to this date.

High For This:
This is the first track to kick off this mixtape with bass heavy song where Abel convincing this girl to try drugs (where we see a lot throughout this project) and trust me because she wants to be ‘High For This’ and this is a perfect mood setter for the project.

What You Need:
The instrumentals in this song makes u feel calm and a lighter tone to this experience after this trippy intro. Now Abel wants to convince a girl that she is wasting her time with the wrong guy and Abel and Abel’s lifestyle is What she needs

House of Ballons/ Glass table girls:
The first half of this song Abel is making us imagine a house party where everybody is really depressed and he is telling them constantly that all of this is fun and we are all happy but everybody is drugged as fuck and cant breathe

Because they have been smoking weed and doing drugs all night and have hotboxed the house and regarding all of this we uses the lyrics “If it hurts to breathe, open a window” “Oh your mind wants to leave but you can’t go” which is a metaphor for Abel’s depression in which he is

Trapped without an escape, trying to escape but he just can’t. He also constantly tries to convince himself that he is happy and none of this lifestyle is depressing instead, all of this is fun.

Glass Table Girls:
This is the second part of the song House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls
in which includes a beat switch to transition to this part of the song. Abel gives us a very drug- influenced verse where takes us on the dark trip of snorting cocaine (707) on a 707 table

The Morning:
This song is arguably my favorite The Weeknd song of all time and i have listened to it tons of times.
The contrast to the last track and this track represents night and day. This track takes place in The Morning where last night’s events occured on HOB/GTG

This time is a moment for Abel to look forward but the thing is that he is getting prepared for doing all of these partying again but he also mentions how he wants to escape this house of balloons yet also looking forward to push himself into pleasure himself despite the pain

Wicked Games:
My second fav Abel song.
He continues this depression route and now he has lost all of this self- confidence and turns to prostitutes as a quick confidence boost even knowing that this is never going to end up as a serious relationship, at this point he feels lost

The Party & After Party:
The first part is nothing new as Abel is seducing a girl and trying to have sex with her but here his delivery is great and a bright spot in this part of the song and includes the legendary line “Tats on your arms, high heeled shoes make u 6 feet tall”1/2

This second half of the song Abel doesn’t want to commit himself in a relationship were he just wants sex, drugs, pleasure for the night and he tells the girl that this is a one night stand instead of making the girl think that encounter was something special

Coming Down:

Coming down is a simple track where The Weeknd obviously is “Coming Down” and its a story where he tells us that he only appreciates and love this girl when he is coming down which is a metaphor for the partying, sex, drugs where he is high or ‘up’ and the

Coming down meaning the lonely morning after all of this happened and he shits himself about not caring about this girl when he is sober and feels lonely
“When im faded i forget, forget what you mean to me, hope you know what you mean to me”

Loft Music:
This seems like a pretty drug- influenced song where the lyrics may seem bland in comparison to the other tracks but still a great song and may seem like a break from the depression.
The Weeknd is trying to make this girl have sex with him in his Loft in the city.

The Knowing:
The last song phew, Abel here is getting a taste of his own medicine by getting cheated on by this girl and he gets shattered but he is telling us and the girl that he doesn’t care but his vocals make it seem like he is hurt.

This whole mixtape is just a trip down Abel Tesfaye’s state of mind regarding the heavy partying, heavy drug use, sex, pain, depression. This is a great example of Alternative R&B in which he has claimed king, also this whole mixtape just feels really powerful and touchy

Because of Abel’s angelic/ powerful voice and very dark production. Its just trully amazing to think a 19-20 year old wrote this and he was just getting started with his music career. Thank You @theweeknd for this timeless music which i will never get tired of. I love You, XOTWD
