@CBSelfCareClub @caitrionambalfe This week my son lost a classmate to suicide, age 15. The school sent out a notification to parents about our kids and their mental health during this COVID crisis. This is the 4th student in the district just since the pandemic started.
Typically the kids would have the assistance of counselors and crisis members available at the school to talk to. However, most kids are home, online. This is also what is adding to the stress for the kids, as most are struggling to learn, getting failing grades,
are away from their friends, isolated and many times just feel alone and helpless. Many are anxious and nervous about COVID and maybe don't fully understand or comprehend what it is about. It is important that we are talking with our kids, keep them involved.
The school offered just a few things you can do with your kids and I thought it was worthy to share.
1. Laugh-Watch a funny movie, look up a funny meme or tell jokes. 2. Cry-Grab a tissue and just let it out and let them know it's ok to be sad but to share it together.
3. Breathe-The simple act of concentrating on breathing air in and out is an effective tool in managing anxiety. 4. Move your body-Go for a walk, run, shoot hoops. Get off the couch and do something active. 5. Connect physically-Give your child a 20 sec hug.
Reassure him/her that everything is going to be okay. I know suicide prevention doesn't begin and end with COVID. Our kids are bombarded in this time we live in with so much more than they should ever deal with. I myself lost my 9 yrs old grandson last year.
Just remember to check in on them from time to time.
