For those in the Scottish literary community wondering about the cancellation of the @Saltire_Society Lit Awards this year, it's worth remembering the controversy that arose this time last year, which @StevieLMarsden & I wrote about in @bellacaledonia 1/ https://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2019/12/17/inside-the-saltire-society-literary-awards/
The shorter article related to a longer piece @StevieLMarsden & I had written for @JCASC1 based on our autoethnographic experiences as administrator, judge and researchers for (and of) the awards, here 2/ : https://www.lectitopublishing.nl/Article/Detail/the-first-rule-of-judging-club-inside-the-saltire-society-literary-awards-6354
I would also suggest reading @DaniGaravelli1's substantial and thoughtful piece from last year, which followed on from @LesleyMcDowell1's resignation as a Saltire Society lit awards judge 3/ https://www.scotsman.com/whats-on/arts-and-entertainment/dani-garavelli-writing-wrongs-literary-prize-land-1399347
Collectively these pieces don't give a full picture, nor explain a @CreativeScots funding decision, but - while I agree that it's a terrible shame the awards aren't happening this year & the Scot lit environment is poorer for it - it might be worth considering such contexts... 4/
One thing I'm sure about is that if I were designing a new set of literary awards for Scotland, I probably wouldn't start from here 5/
Though I would not want to overlook the very rich history and contribution that the Saltire Soc Lit Awards have made, as you'll be able to read in much more detail in @StevieLMarsden's very shortly forthcoming book Prizing Scottish Literature 6/ https://www.anthempress.com/prizing-scottish-literature-epub
(for those interested in UK-wide historical contexts of 'state-sponsored' literature, including prizes, take a look at @asha_pb's recent book ( https://global.oup.com/academic/product/state-sponsored-literature-9780198857761?cc=gb&lang=en&#) and website ( https://statesponsoredliterature.com/ )) 7/
