Quick thread on paywalls and media and revenue
The dearth of budget for local media outlets is absolutely depressing. There& #39;s no other way to say it. Right now across the country the fourth estate simply doesn& #39;t exist to keep elected officials honest and people informed
My entire time in the media has been marked by the death of traditional revenue and readership and newspaper companies& #39; inability to recoup on new platforms. Hell, during the & #39;00s many refused to admit it was happening!
Today we see a variety of paywall models for local media, and often we grumble when a basic piece of info is blocked on a clickthrough to a local paper& #39;s site. The intention is honest — they need the money, y& #39;all, seriously — but the execution is awful
What local outlets have to understand is that only a particular level, a particular quality of journalism can achieve this goal; of getting random folks to shell out the cash they once did daily for a print paper
Today I hold up one shining example of the kind of media where, upon seeing the link, I cannot help but subscribe to a paper in a city where I don& #39;t live, visit or work in because the content is that fucking good
