Quick thread on paywalls and media and revenue
The dearth of budget for local media outlets is absolutely depressing. There's no other way to say it. Right now across the country the fourth estate simply doesn't exist to keep elected officials honest and people informed
My entire time in the media has been marked by the death of traditional revenue and readership and newspaper companies' inability to recoup on new platforms. Hell, during the '00s many refused to admit it was happening!
Today we see a variety of paywall models for local media, and often we grumble when a basic piece of info is blocked on a clickthrough to a local paper's site. The intention is honest — they need the money, y'all, seriously — but the execution is awful
What local outlets have to understand is that only a particular level, a particular quality of journalism can achieve this goal; of getting random folks to shell out the cash they once did daily for a print paper
Today I hold up one shining example of the kind of media where, upon seeing the link, I cannot help but subscribe to a paper in a city where I don't live, visit or work in because the content is that fucking good
Congrats, @TimesFreePress, you just Tweeted me into a subscription and maybe saved all of journalism https://twitter.com/TimesFreePress/status/1330964348685127680
