Cancel thanksgiving, cancel Christmas, Imperial Christianity is canceled
We can finally celebrate Christmas as God intended: in our homes, alone, in the dark, contemplating on the idea that Jesus' message and arrival is about the upending of our personal worlds of comfort
This is not a shitpost, this is a homily
I just want to emphasize that the idea you can *cancel* Christmas, like, the very holy day of Christmas, simply by preventing a party to save lives during a plague is incredibly blasphemous and offensive to me
What kind of miserable "oh ye of little faith" busybody who missed the entire point of the gospel do you have to be to lament Christmas is canceled just because you can't have a party
Get behind me, Satan
I just want to clarify that my anger is not at people who are sad they can't see friends and family this holiday season. I am also sad about it. It's directed at the politicians and pundits who openly flout orders to stay at home while many of us sacrifice to save lives.
Sadness and grief, I understand and think is completely valid. To openly party and risk lives in the midst of social death and justify it by wrap yourself in the cross and flag while doing so just disgusts me to the core.
As a Christian, I do think the pandemic gives us a unique moment in history to reconsider Christmas and its story. It's not about celebration and family reunion but about homeless families, scattered families, families in exile. It's about small packages promising revolution.
Is the Christmas story also sad? Yes, Christmas is terribly sad. I think it is absolutely ok to be sad during Christmas. It is entirely appropriate to be sad! We should normalize it.
This is not to dismiss sadness about the holidays but to embrace it, as my therapist tells me. To let it work through us and run its course. It's uncomfortable and it sucks (it really sucks!!!) but is vital. Maybe we could use Christmas as a day for that? I know I probably will.
Anyway that's my no nuance November hot take, I really should go eat before I keep mouthing off
