France has never been colorblind in its colonies or in the metropole. Marcon‘s policy is certainly a longer French practice that is premised on notions of whiteness, belonging, unbelonging, and citizenship. Pass it on!
Typos abound! Bear with me! *Macron

Ok, this turned into a thread--Eek. But @OlivetteOtele's book African Europeans is also important. So, of course, purchase and read this book. I also teach my students about the myth of French colorblindness and laïcité as well as larger discussions about European myths.
Germany has its own myths and racist practices. The Netherlands has what Gloria Wekker calls "white innocence." But let me leave these discussions for today. This is all to say that Europe is not white, but consistently imagines itself in this way. White supremacy is globe.
For years on both sides of the Atlantic, scholars and activists have recognized how whiteness in its entirety (practices, discourses, attachments, codifications, etc.) pervades and evolves across Europe. See Brexit. Ok, fin!
Ok a few more names of peps to follow and read: @Laprofmme, @audreycelestine, Sarah Mazouz, @Soccerpolitics, and Leora Auslander and Thomas Holt, “Sambo in Paris: Race and Racism in the Iconography of the Everyday.”
Ok I swear this is the last one for real this time. But let me add @DrSepinwall, whose forthcoming book in the spring also engages these larger issues or race, slavery, identity through film and video games. Good day!
