Nigerians: your petition is currently being discussed in the Westminster hall in the UK.
RT Hon Theresa Villiers opens the floor with the premise of the endsars movement. She mentioned what the demands of the protesters were. She reiterated the importance of how peaceful the prostesters were.
The RT Hon has now began to talk about the events of the lekki toll plaza on October 20th 2020. She mentioned DJ Switch's testimony and mentioned CNN's investigation. She also mentioned that some families are still looking for their loved ones
RT Hon mentioned the importance of the UK stepping into the situation and reiterates that it's not a general sanctions as people believe but targeted sanctions on Individuals who have violated human rights.
She mentioned that the committee should listen to the "plea" of e-petitioners however not interfer in the domestic issues of the state.
She mentioned that Nigeria is a country with so much going for it and the endsars protects was/is supposed to further glamorise the country not destabilise it as thought.
A labour MP is currently listening the premise of the protesters. In her words, she call attacking the protesters was not only "undemocratic" but "immortal". The Hon has also mentioned that the govt had tried to coverup the massacre.
The MP has also said the Nigerian govt needs to stop freezing accounts and mentioned that Min. Of information needs to stop targeting the CNN and the media.
She has asked that the UK govt stop being neutral and it's time for "a new Nigeria"
Another MP Tom Tugendhat is making arguments for the sanctions and how the country is supposed to be a power house but the "people are being robbed" by it's ill government.
Tom Tugendhat also said the e-petitioners got this right at this time and the chair looks into the sanctions regime.
MP Janet Daby opens the floor citing the statement of the Nigeria army claiming the event was "fake news" she talked about how the organisers have been harassed, sanctioned and harassed by the Nigerian government. These actions are against the fundamentals of human rights.
MP Janet Daby says that residents of her consituency have been calling her worried about their friends and families back home. She talks about the importance of the sanctions for "accountability" and upholding the fundamental of human rights.
Another MP is currently speaking. She notes that at this time "everyone currently agrees that the actions of the govt was wrong and sanctions are important" she talks about the removal of the cameras and the lights were off.
The MP is also quoting the witnesses actions. She talks about the media agencies have been fined, activists have be harassed and how the govt is using everything to silence the protesters.
The MP closed by pleading with the minister to please stand with the young people asking for accountability.
Taiwo Owatemi opens the floor by asking that she hopes the sanctions won't affect innocent citizens in anyway, manner or former. If yes, she's up for the sanctions as the Govt doesn't want to be accountable. She highlights the proposed social media currently being pushed by NASS
