Wow!!! It looks great!!! Stand by for more info in a bit! 🙌 https://twitter.com/rocketlab/status/1330916778365501440
@Peter_J_Beck - "The test was a complete success, maybe even more than we had imagined"
@Peter_J_Beck "We impacted the ocean at 9 m/s, 1 m/s below expected"
@Peter_J_Beck "We have incredible footage we'll be sharing in the next couple days" Ooooo I can't wait!!! 😍
@Peter_J_Beck "The stage survived coming back from space, but took quite the beating in the sea" (Don't forget water recovery isn't part of the long term plan, just the first step of this recovery testing process before trying to recover with a helicopter)
@Peter_J_Beck "We'll take parts off and try and requalify them for flight and try and requalify the whole stage for flight. Then we'll some day refly components and then a whole stage"
@Peter_J_Beck "We'll probably run a very similar mission again. We'll move some instrumentation around and improve some thermal protection systems. We know the TPS wasn't perfect because we didn't have the data to know what should or shouldn't be"
@Peter_J_Beck "We're not surprised some areas took a real lashing. But we got a stage back, we got fantastic data, we're real confident Electron can be a reusable launch vehicle."
@Peter_J_Beck "It's clear to say that reentry environments exceed launch environments. We need to recertify all parts for descent"
@Peter_J_Beck "The recovery system takes about a 10kg payload hit. We might add another 5kg, possibly 10kg in payload capacity in recovery hardware."
@Peter_J_Beck "Some of the modifications to the heatshield will remain on every flight (expended or not). Because it just takes too much to change out for different configurations"
@Peter_J_Beck "(With recovery) You do add another operational constraint. We monitor various weather conditions down range. That's driving the operational constraints we'll see." (talking about whether or not launches may scrub because weather for recovery)
@Peter_J_Beck "The powerpack heatshield is currently not designed for reentry, it's designed for ascent. We likely won't be sharing any pictures of the powerpack because it's missing some heatshields and sharing some of the secret sauce"
@Peter_J_Beck "It's pretty roasty down there. But we've got data and it puts us in a great position to redesign the heatshield. We thought about redesigning it before the mission, but we thought that'd be a bit of a stab in the dark."
@Peter_J_Beck "I'm guessing by the end of this it'll look incredibly obvious and go "wow why didn't we think of this". Like anything that's well designed it looks incredibly obvious, but until you go through it, there's a lot of unknowns."
@Peter_J_Beck "Our whole intention is to take the whole stage, pick it up, recharge it and fly"
@Peter_J_Beck "The interstage components look like new! The whole interstage is looking really really wonderful. If we can get the whole vehicle to look and perform like that, that'll take away a huge amount of time (increase cadence of flight)"
"We're trying to avoid recovery taking as much time as building a stage from scratch." "One Electron is hauling off the line in slightly under 30 days. We set a record the other day at about 18 days" (production of a new stage)
@Peter_J_Beck "Yes, the air capture is something we've doubled down on. Pulling rockets out of the ocean isn't fun. Air capture will be the way going forward (eventually). We enjoy the freedom of the LC-1 range. It's a private range and very little doing."
@Peter_J_Beck "Once we get it down, we don't want to fly just expendables out of Wallops. We do have an excellent helicopter pilot for recovery." (Hoping to do recovery at wallops some day. Might take a bit longer for many logistic considerations)
@Peter_J_Beck "If you can get an uber to be the same price as a bus ticket, that really changes things. It has the potential to really change the economics"
@Peter_J_Beck "If we can get reusability to the point where it's a light touch between flights, the economics can really change. I'm not going to guess what those economics are going to be. The majority of the cost of building electron are stage one."
@Peter_J_Beck "It's hard to say just yet because we don't know how much refurbishment and testing will need to be done. But if it's a small amount, expect the economics to change."
@Peter_J_Beck "We're a conservative kind of bunch. So we haven't been modeling our future launch cadence around reuse." (the number of currently projected future flights does NOT factor in potential reuse)
@Peter_J_Beck "I can dismiss that (working on second stage recovery). I will not put another hat up on that. But we are not working on that."
Peter DOES plan to eat his hat, despite people telling him he shouldn't... It MIGHT be a part of (or the whole thing) made of wool, but he might go with something more edible if people insist for his own safety.
