Yesterday @VisitParkside I taught out of 1 Peter 4:12-19 which discusses suffering. In my message, I referenced John Lewis' famous quote about Good Trouble. After my message, an elderly white navy veteran came up to me with tears in his eyes.
He said, "I grew up in the south with no respect for John Lewis. As I've gotten older, I have learned the error of my ways. That man was an American hero. Our country needs more men like him so badly right now."
We talked for a while. He was full of emotion and finished the conversation by saying, "Matt, let's find some good trouble."
I'm so thankful for men like him at Parkside who are willing to express remorse, learn, grow, and care deeply about the suffering of others. Our church has so much we can learn from the wisdom of being willing to say, "I was wrong."
