Another event common is that, both the MCs lost someone close to them who they really cared about. Both the MCs were absolutely devastated.

Both the MCs were absolutely devastated by the deaths of their loved ones. It was their first major loss in which they felt helpless and hopelessly defeated. This single death affected the future of the characters. (1/3)

What happened after these events is where the difference lies.

Now these themes are not new or unique in any way, but the impact and meaning they had in the story is unquestionable & the way they were portrayed was simply phenomenal.
