Some points from José Mourinho’s match plan in Tottenham Hotspur’s game against Manchester City. (21/11/2020)

‘José Mourinho had answers to all of Pep’s questions’

a thread:
Defensive phase:

José instructed his team to play with a mid block for the majority of the game (4-4-2) and a low block in other moments.
Defensive phase:

when city were building with 3 at the back, Tanguy and Kane tended to occupy the centre of the pitch and shut the passing lines to Cancelo and Rodri which forces city to play wide, where spurs full backs were ready to press the wingers when receiving the ball.
Defensive phase:

when City managed to beat the press, KDB and Bernardo, who were playing in the pockets/half spaces, had the license to run inbehind the full backs. But Sissoko and Hojbjerg/Bergwijn were aware of those movements and managed to control the spaces in behind.
Possession phase:

Spurs were flexible enough to build in two ways based on city’s pressing style.

when City pressed in the final third with aggression, Spurs were comfortable playing long to Kane or one of the fullbacks to beat the press and find spaces to explore and create.
Possession phase:

While when City’s high press wasn’t organized and intense, Spurs built with 2/3 + GK, and will wait for Tanguy or Kane to drop between the lines to receive the ball and use their ability to turn, carry the ball to the final third and pick a pass in tight spaces
Possession phase:

In the final third, Son and Stevie will make runs to exploit the spaces behind the backline whenever Kane or Tanguy gets the ball in dangerous areas.

-For the 1st goal, Kane’s movement dragged both CBs out of possession which created a space for Son to attack.
Attacking transition:

When losing the ball in the final third, spurs players where aggressive to try and win the ball back ASAP to try attacking again and stop city from progressing with the ball as well.
Defensive transition:

After losing possession, 10 outfield will create IMMEDIATELY a compacted block (in 4/4/2 or 5/3/2 shape) to keep it tight so the opposition players won’t have the time or the space to receive the ball in dangerous areas or create clear-cut chances.
Talking points:

• Tactically, Mourinho was a step ahead of Pep during the whole game.

•The stats didn’t reflect what happened in the game at all.

• In possession, Tanguy was the most important player in the 1st half.

•Without the ball, Bergwijn played a magnificent game.
Talking points:

• Sissoko was tremendous without the ball. He covered the area left behind Aurier when he pushed forward especially in counter attacks.

• Since the game against Burnley, Toby was one of the best players in the team.

•Hojbjerg is the engine of the team.
