— seeing people criticize cancel culture: my thoughts // a thread
to start with, I& #39;m not a huge fan of cancel culture. there& #39;s a lot of things I& #39;m not a fan of: carrd activism, twitter activism, thinking that RTs + reading one resource found on twt = being educated. but in the end, these all come down to one thing I DO like — using your voice +
however small or limited, and holding someone or something accountable. personally? I think twitter is one of those places that have become heavily politicized, with 16yos who& #39;ve read 1 carrd and now aggressively cancel people for not "abiding to the social justice laws listed" +
and I think cancel culture is unnecessarily aggressive. when you give a twitter-using population to engage in hate comments all against one person, it can get wild. chaotic. disgusting. but in the end, here& #39;s what it boils down to: power is very unevenly distributed. +
it& #39;s concentrated very specifically around people with big followings. all these people have to do is drop and @ and suddenly, *their* following becomes a mob. poc, queer, neurodiverse, and other people from marginalized backgrounds get hit by this the worst. what cancel +
culture manages to do is to spread the power equally. instead of a disproportionate battle, it concentrates the power of a mob — a whole group of people who, individually, wouldn& #39;t have dared to speak against this big influencer but together *can*. it makes our freedom and duty +
to keep people accountable (bc let& #39;s face it; half the good things that happen in this world would never happen if it weren& #39;t for the pressure of the PEOPLE (the other half happens purely bc it& #39;s economically or politically beneficial)) easier and more accessible. +
in conclusion: is cancel culture perfect? no! it makes me so uncomfortable! is it necessary? yes? until we find a better & more constructive way to hold people accountable, this is all we& #39;ve got. it& #39;s up to the individual to make sure THEY don& #39;t become judge, jury, executioner +
don& #39;t become the monster you& #39;re advocating against, guys. don& #39;t.

(aside — also! don& #39;t devote all your energy in little battles like character rep & be silent about real life people. is rep important in fiction? yes. is it more so than lives. no.)
