Sa true lang, hindi uso ang bad acting sa universe na ni-create ng IDFC sa both Gameboys and Pearl Next Door. It’s amazing how the PND ensemble’s acting choices are in line with GB’s acting, which makes sense since they are moving in the same universe. Ivan Payawal’s magic!
Pearl Next Door has a more mature narrative. More on figuring out siya about finding love as an adult. Second coming of age kumbaga, which you experience in your mid-20s. May escapist flavors pa rin ang show, pero mas nag aappeal siya sa mid-adult audience. Amazing!
Saka yung script ni Keavy, ganda! The characters and their struggles are define, and yung main plot, it doesn’t feel stretched at all. Ang daming subtle details about gender, being a queer woman, and choices na i-present in the first four episodes. Pero ang pinaka gusto ko is (1)
How unafraid and unapologetic she is in making her characters humand by exposing their weaknesses and flaws. Some series are afraid to show character flaws, kaya madalas carbon cutout at nagrerely lang sa ibang elemento para maka kapit ka. Pero Keavy and Ash aren’t like that. (2)
They’re not afraid to show the best and the worst of their characters. Kaya sa PND at GB, kakapitan mo talaga ang mga characters kasi parang totoong tao talaga sila. Karleen, for example, is such a complex character who isn’t afraid of showing her flaws. Buong buo sya.
If we are really serious on our calls to have more quality queer content, I think going out of our comfort zones and exploring other stories is also a huge step? PND is the first GL series I followed and it feels so new and interesting to me. And it’s worth it. We deserve more!
And when we say we deserve more, we say we deserve better stories. Sure, we need our cheesy and shitty romcoms too. But I believe we deserve quality too so periodt
