Please, more upper-MG novels with lower word counts than the industry standards.

Most of my 11-13 y-os prefer Horrid Henry, Goosebumps and illustrated diary formats to standard length books.

Tiktok & interactive gaming are the competition.
Industry word counts for MG books in general are too long for many modern readers, I find.

Longer books are fine for kids already into reading, but it's hard to pull in new converts that way.

Humour and brevity tend to be the most attractive features for 8-13s now.
Many of our 8-10 y-os will still happily read eg Rainbow Magic (6K) and up to about 20K is okay. Much above that and enthusiasm wanes.
