/8 The Society of Antiquaries is an educational charity – we support research and protect 1000s of culturally-significant collections for the public (like the oldest existing copies of the Magna Carta) #SocAntiquaries
/8 Our home at Burlington House was built as a hub for culture and science in the 1870s and remains one today. Over 145 years it has thrived, with public events, open days, conferences and more, and contributed to the country’s intellectual and public life.
/8 Yet, we will soon be forced out of our home. Since 2012, our rent has been raised by 3,100%. As a self-supporting charity, we will not be able to continue facing escalating rents while protecting our precious artefacts and maintaining our contribution to society.
/8 A 2019 PwC assessment estimated that 78% of the £5.4M total gross value delivered each year by the Society will be at risk if we are forced to relocate. That’s why we’re seeking long-term security to continue to promote the understanding of our historical past today.
/8 Relocation also represents a major financial threat to us. Leaving would mean a prohibitively costly process of housing our unique collections elsewhere, while moving fragile historical items en masse is a huge and extremely costly undertaking.
/8 We ask Government to let us stay in our home at Burlington House – to safeguard access to our collection of global historical importance and continue nurturing the next generation of #history academics and public interested in the human past.
/8 Help us fight to keep the Society at Burlington House by using the hashtag #SocAntiquaries to show your support.
