In order to provide insurance for my family, I work at a large company as a Senior Software Engineer.
It sucks that everyone in this country doesn’t have insurance. This is why I am a huge supporter of universal healthcare. It breaks my heart to see others suffer.

My family had the bare minimum as I grew up.
My father worked in a fertilizer plant up until two years ago, when he retired after 45 years.
My mother was a stay at home mom up until her death at age 37.

This was a shitty part of my life. Like really shitty.
When all this happened, I had a one year old brother. So with my mom gone, my dad working nights, and two older brothers who constantly left to hang with friends, it left me as the parent of a one year old.

My dad had acquired an IBM PC and a DOS manual. I read this manual inside and out multiple times, teaching myself how to use the computer.
Within a few months I was coding.

All the money I earned was quickly spent buying the hottest game at the time, Space Quest.

Then came the serious depression.
It took many months before the shock of finding my mother dead wore off. I mostly tried to ignore that it had happened, until I no longer could.
Naturally, this meant me getting into trouble.

Some friends and I decided to pound Old English 40oz in a park. It was great fun, and I got to make out with some cute girls that night.

From here things escalated quickly.
My older brother began experimenting with drugs, and being the guy he is, he offered to show me the ropes.
At this point it was just weed. I loved it, and still love it to this day. But it’s illegal where I live. Fucking conservatives.

Before I knew it, I was driving around in a car tripping my balls off on LSD. My brother kept bringing me along anytime my dad had a day off.
Anyway, we are now about 10 months out from my moms death. My dad decides he needs to “let us know he’s getting married again”...

And this is where my second run in with Johnny Law comes in. I spent some time in juvenile hall this time.
My brother and I were dumb and made a mistake. We liked weed, so we decided to grow it.

I was failing school. I was failing life. It was a real low point for me.

Since I was in trouble all the time, leaving the house stopped being an option. Permanently grounded was how I’d describe my 16th year of life.
This is when I first read Carl Sagan’s Contact. The story sucked me in and I immediately fell in love.

This lead me to meet a friend who was attending the local university. He was a programmer.

My new friend worked at a computer repair shop down the road from my house.
I would ride my bike there every chance I got. He would teach me how to build computers and all about programming. I would work for free in return.
This literally saved my life. Suicide was on my mind.

Anyway, the whole point of this was to be an introduction. I have contemplated doing this for 7 years.
It’s only been in the last few months that any of you have acted like I even existed. To those of you, I want to say thank you. Your kindness has meant the world to me.
