i stopped being entertained by it years ago. at this point i see it as what it is, underlying homophobia and the exploitation of the queer audience. let me explain: https://twitter.com/lchlraku/status/1330719818467725313
it’s literally a marketing technique. they want to profit off of the queer audience (and allies) while avoiding alienating other consumers. they are refraining from having actual representation while using implied queerness to get views and make money.
queerbaiting also hinders progress as it perpetuates the notion that as long as you imply gay, the queers will watch it. no need to make actual change! it is literally explotting the queer audience- it’s manipulation.
and we are so SO fucking desperate for any representation and content that more often then not, we settle. we settle for queerbait bc we internally accepted that we won’t get the real thing. its come the the point where we not only accept it, we expect it.
i expect it. i make jokes about it, i laugh about it, but is it gunny? no. it’s proof that people aren’t as open minded as they claim to be and it’s forcing us, even if we might not consciously be aware of it, to accept this.
accept that those characters probably won’t get together but hey IT’S FINE! what is fanfiction for!!! but that’s really not fucking okay and we normalized it. we normalized it SO MUCH that we don’t even bat an eye anymore.
these cishet writers with no understanding of queerness have found this loophole on how to make $$$ off of the queer audience without actually improving the horrid state of queer representation on film & tv and face no backlash from the homophobic and bigoted audience.
yes it can be cute and funny and entertaining but is it? or do we just settle for it? do we just chalk it upto “it’s yearning” or “it’s slowburn” or “it’s all about the looks and undertones”?
wouldn’t it be better to have all the “good” part of queerbaiting but actually have the characters end up together canonically?
no hate to op - i have been entertained in the past and i still ship (as you can fucking tell from my acct and @) queerbait ships but i’m lowkey so tired of joking about it bc it’s hindering actual representation.
ok i’m done. on another note, tomorrow’s queerbait breakdown will be fuffy! goodnight <3
to add on - in some (probably most) cases they don’t even explore a queer relationship after the fans (and critics) point out the chemistry between characters/actors bc it “doesn’t fit the show’s narrative” or “it’s not what they planned for the character”. this is homophobia.
no bc false advertising is heavily regulated and in some cases fined n punished so why is THIS okay? bc queerbaiting is a marketing technique -literally defined as such- and is all about luring in a particular audience with the promise of something they never plan on delivering?
ok actually gonna stop now bc i’m making myself upset
