Religions are just maps of the universe and our mortal experience of it. Is a map true? Yes and no. Do you believe in a particular map? Yes and no. It is a just map, limited in it's fidelity.
The true spiritual experience cannot occur INSIDE the map. A religion is a tool for evaluating the experience, but the experience itself happens beyond a religion's limitations.
If you have become dogmatic to the tenets of the religion, in some sense you have become captive to the limitations of that map, unable to venture beyond it's border.
Maps of reality are often confused for the territory but it's particularly dangerous and limiting in the context of spiritual experience...which ultimately is boundless, literally, as the cosmos itself.
...because a true spiritual experience is an experience of boundless totality.
