I will start by saying that Monster is an absolute masterpiece in every conceivable way I can describe it. The show is uncompromising in how it methodically reveals the larger conspiracy at work in Monster. Every episode builds on the last culminating into the grand narrative
Tapestry that is Monster. Tenma is one of the greatest protagonists ever devised and his journey in Monster contains numerous emotional high points and his overall philosophy concerning life and how all life is equal contrast wonderfully with the incredibly dark themes Monster
Also explores. Johan is not only one of the greatest antagonists in anime but in all of fiction. The way his mere presence hangs over the entirety of Monster is a testament of how well written of an antagonists he is. He is also a perfect example of how great evil is not born but
Is instead created by their environment. Grimmer is one of the best supporting characters in of fiction as well. His entire arc is incredibly poignant and is very much the inverse of Johan as he challenges himself to find the beauty of life and his own humanity.
Nina also phenomenal and is involved with many of Monster’s most emotional moments as she struggles with her own identity and guilt over being Johan’s twin and allowing him to become the Monster that he is.
The rest of the cast is also fantastic with even the most ancillary characters adding to the themes and narrative of Monster as they all are confronted with true evil and have to decide whether the darkness will completely consume them.
There is so much more I could say about Monster and certainly there is little doubt that this will be a piece of fiction that stay with me for an incredibly long time. Monster is very much narrative perfection and worthy of all the praise it receives.
