This is really good, and it gets at something I& #39;ve been wondering for a while now: As much as people talk about IU needing to run the ball better, I am just increasingly convinced the staff doesn& #39;t see it that way. #iufb https://twitter.com/AndyWittry/status/1330696283791691776">https://twitter.com/AndyWittr...
If Indiana can tear off yards on the ground, I& #39;m sure it will. But this passing game& #39;s ability to stretch the field so consistently (marginal explosiveness numbers nationally great across the board) and the multiple downfield threats, IU seems fine throwing for money. #iufb
IU is fifth in the Big Ten in plays of 10+ yards, second in 30+ yards and first in 40+ yards. Mike Penix is less accurate than last year but far more prolific. @AndyWittry& #39;s post makes a really good point about all the big yards IU tore off on first downs. #iufb
Some of that was dictated, decisions-wise, by the need to chase the scoreboard. But the point is, IU made those plays. #iufb
And not just to Ty Fryfogle. Miles Marshall is probably Penix& #39;s fourth option right now, and he& #39;s averaging 14.5 ypc. He has four catches in three of his four games. Everyone& #39;s getting involved. #iufb
IU was a passing team last year, but Hoosiers used a lot more screen actions and short passes. I can& #39;t say this empirically without charting every snap, but it feels like Nick Sheridan is using the sidelines and attacking the safeties a lot more than using quick throws. #iufb
Anyway, IU& #39;s first six snaps against Michigan were passes. There can be no doubting where this offense thinks its strike zone is. And @AndyWittry does a really good job of explaining how explosive that offense can be in Penix& #39;s hands.
