Thoughts on the reported choice of @LindaT_G as next @USUN ambassador.
Given her strong record on African affairs @StateDept, she is superbly-placed to rectify a sense of drift in US engagement on #Africa @UN since @NikkiHaley arrived in 2017. [1/6] https://www.worldpoliticsreview.com/articles/26399/why-haley-s-successor-at-the-u-n-should-have-a-clue-about-africa

In fairness, @USAmbUN Kelly Craft was trying to to get a better grip on #African issues (notably #SouthSudan) before #COVID19. But she lacked @LindaT_G's depth of experience on the region. Partially because of @USUN drift, it's been. obvious that #African @UN/ #UNSC members have been deeply unhappy with the UN's approach to the continent in recent years. [3/6] https://www.crisisgroup.org/global/three-troubling-trends-un-security-council
That said, @LindaT_G will have a *very* broad array of challenges @USUN, starting with restoring morale and drive in a mission that gradually lost it in the #Trump era (despite still having some fine staff). And even when talking about #Africa and relates topics like @UNPeacekeeping, @LindaT_G will need to navigate questions about #China's role @UN, and if #Beijing and @JoeBiden can cooperate (or just coexist) in the UN system. For a broader overview of challenges facing the #USA and @USUN in the #UnitedNations system, see this interview from the spring. Suffice it to say, @LindaT_G is not signing up for a sinecure if she moves to 1st Avenue... [ENDS] https://www.centeronnationalsecurity.org/vital-interests-issue-31-richard-gowan
