So you want to build a following and become an influential voice on Twitter.

A thread on observations and experiences this year.

🧵
More followers, more problems.

When you have a smaller platform and limited reach, it’s easier to find common ground or agree to disagree.
Envy justifies harassment.

If someone decides that you don’t deserve a platform, they may make it their mission to destroy your reputation and career. They will contact your employer to demand your firing because they want to eliminate your source of income.
David and Goliath troll tactic

Some trolls with fewer followers will distort your message and take cheap shots. If you respond, the trolls will claim you’re a bully who has sent followers to harass them.
Self-censorship.

You’ll quickly realize that your audience dictates what you can/cannot say. Step out of line, and you’ll receive a barrage of harassment.

Ex. a sci w/ a huge following received death threats for harmless tweets about Interstellar. She no long discusses movies.
Pick your battles

If you respond to trolls, you acknowledge their viewpoint and give them a platform.

In many cases, it’s exactly what they want because they get more followers. https://twitter.com/sarah_mojarad/status/1330643241817915393
