"ending where it started" doesn't automatically make writing good, btw. "circular structure" is just a fucking descriptive & the entire point of them is to draw contrast to the place/themes of beginning. im sorry to english lit student this up but really. dont fucking patronise-
people by saying they dont "get" that the show had to end where it started because a. why bother with 15 seasons of a show in the first place if you go to so much effort to erase character, plot, and thematic development in the LAST TWO EPISODES
and b. "circular" =/= good, "callbacks" =/= clever. anyone can go over a script from an early episode and pick something up to draw parallels with. the question is HOW and WHY those parallels are drawn. i'll simplify: using alliteration in a poem doesn't make the poem good.
drawing back to the beginning of a story is just a narrative technique. the fact that it was done does NOT make the story good. the fact that it was done badly, and smugly, makes the end of the story BAD (surprise surprise).
famous examples of a narrative circularity? of mice and men. beginning and ending beside the same pool, with a storytelling of hopes for the future and pastoral language to describe the surroundings. the violence and hopelessness of the ending is so jarring because of the peace -
and softness of the beginning. or the reiteration of revenge, grief, and trauma in the oresteia. the point is that, every time revenge is reiterated and narrative curls back on itself, cycles of revenge and grief are deepened. it has a PURPOSE. it's also worth saying that these-
themes are alluded to throughout the texts, they dont just pop up out of nowhere (not out of nowhere, out of laziness, lets be real) like in the last ep of spn. (electra's language in the 2nd play of the oresteia reiterates, respawns itself-
just as she reiterates the murder she 'avenges' - the murder of her father, who was himself murdered for killing his other daughter.) there's a POINT and a MESSAGE. what was the point, what was the message, of the spn finale? that trauma is irreparable, death the cure?
that the only meaningful ties we have are those with family, no matter the implication, no matter the cost? that the only meaningful duties and obligations we have are with family? what about messages of growth, of choice, of healing? the ending was irresponsible, the ending-
was violent, the ending was BAD - morally, and literally. it was textually, artistically, BAD. there's a reason the reviews (outside of those made by b*bros and w*ncesties) are so negative. aesthetically it was a shambles. map the storyline of those 15 years out and it's a dire,
and insulting to the actors and insulting to the fans. ESPECIALLY the young, queer fans. but also just to the art of storytelling. it's true that i "just don't get it", because there's nothing to fucking GET, no substance, no nuance, no accent to make the artistic method of
circularity actually relevant outside of a smug and self-congratulatory pat on the back. smug storytelling is bad storytelling. can't believe im putting a degree in english literature from mf ********* to use on twitter by ranting about a show as bad as this.
