HOW KANYE CREATED THE GREATEST ALBUM OF THE 21ST CENTURY.
MBDTF is Kanye’s Magnum Opus and what I consider to be the best album of the 21st century. Through a stacked features list, and the narrative of the album, Kanye created a masterpiece against all odds.
DARK FANTASY: The story starts with a bedtime story reading, except there’s something darker to it. We must pay attention and listen. “Can we get much higher?” The people ask and Kanye answers, showing his surprise at his success, but at what cost? This is Kanye’s dark fantasy.
GORGEOUS: This is the gorgeous side of his dark fantasy. He’s one of the best to do it and he’s mastered his craft, yet issues in the inter-cities and racism are still high in America. His life might feel gorgeous, but how could he live like this, with all that’s going on?
POWER: Kanye struggles with the infamy and the world’s perception of him. He feels powerful yet so vulnerable, this is shown with the first verse being braggadocios while in the second verse, Kanye begins to contemplate suicide to escape this criticism.
ALL OF THE LIGHTS INTERLUDE/ALL OF THE LIGHTS: With the whole world against him, Kanye looks at what got him here? It was the flashing lights and the luxury of this lifestyle he always wanted. These same lights blinded him away from the issues that would come from it as a result.
MONSTER/SO APPALLED: Kanye must turn into and become the monster the media has made him out to be, this is the only way to survive. Kanye chooses to indulge in this fame on “So Appalled” but you can tell he seems pretty dismal about it. Fame really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be
DEVIL IN A NEW DRESS: Kanye seeks love to ease the pain of fame, but how could he find it? Most of these girls want him for his fame and money. That’s why they are the “devil in a new dress.” They are disguised to lure him in and take everything from him.
RUNAWAY: This is Kanye’s anthem to all the misfits and the misunderstood. He understands the world’s perception of him and he knows he’s done wrong in the past but he’s misunderstood. The outro with the distorted autotune vocals resemble the way the media and the world hear him.
FINAL FOUR TRACKS: On “Hell of a Life” Kanye indulges in fame, one last time. The last three tracks are the come down from fame and are contemplative. He blames himself for failed relationships, looks at his fear of love and asks us one last question, who will survive in America?
