Some actors start out good. Then they read their own press, or perhaps directors ask them to play a part “like in X” and eventually the actor is covered in a crust of dried emotional lava, indicating their way through a parody of what brought them love. How empty that must feel.
They get work though. So much of the audience doesn’t want authenticity, they want that actor doing that bit from 20 years ago that made them feel good then. That kind of emotional dishonesty works for people who are afraid of ever looking too closely at themselves.
Sometimes I say the things to my dear confidant Twitter that I would otherwise say to Aaron. Such a good sounding board, the cavernous silence echoes it all back to me with a fresh perspective.
Like I feel almost reverence toward actors who will put themselves out there and take risks. It’s terrifying. I worked with one actress (not MD), she was having trouble so I asked her to improv new dialogue and she was terrified and brave and brilliant. So much respect for that.
I’m just really sick of not working, end thread. 🙃
