Imma be honest. It's not the use of the style that bothers me.
It's the lack of respect for it's actual name. https://twitter.com/bnicole_lewis/status/1330453579597979648
There are plenty of people in the world aside from Black who have the hair texture to support some puffs. It will just greatly vary in look depending on your curl pattern and length.
The ones added to the game tho? CLEARLY Black. The texture, the rows leading into the puffs. Us.
So, if you are not Black, but you wanna play around with the new styles in your game, fine.
But don't dismiss how big of a deal this is for Black players
These styles had to be PETITIONED FOR by BLACK PEOPLE just to exist in the game. We finally got styles in a game we love that actually look like ours! Something we largely never see in ANY game like this.
For non-Black people this impact will never be fully appreciated.
As evident by all the comments snidely remarking how it's "just a game" "no big deal" "you guys can't gatekeep a style".
1) It was just a game to Y'ALL regardless of the styles available. Your looks are the defaults. Your experience isn't universal.
2) It is a big deal to US. There's a reason that Black gamers literally cheered when thr update dropped.
3) It's our hairstyle.
The amount of history and current stigma regarding Black hair is. A lot to unpack in this thread. So I won't right now.
But a bit of research will tell you why some of us would be pissed seeing on of our signature styles being taken for granted by non-Blacks, and not even named!
It's the lack of respect for what the style is and where it originates that bothers me.
Call the style by it's proper name if you gonna insist on using it. This isn't hard.
I bet if the player who posted that pick had said "Look at my cute Fro Puffs" in the og post, none of this discourse would have taken place.
None of it.
Cuz there would have been some respect on the player's part.
Things are named a certain way for a reason.
You wouldn't call braids locs, you wouldn't call tattoos henna, you wouldn't call a hijab a scarf.
Afro puffs and space buns are NOT the same thing and NOT interchangeable. Acknowledge and respect that.
All that being said, have fun with the style update that Black people gave you. It looks amazing.
You're welcome.
