The fight over "Latinx" is a bad proxy battle for the very real issue that the current coalition of Dem voters is unstable and geographically disadvantageous, and neither the center nor the left's argument for how to fix it is very compelling
Put simply, it is very helpful tactically in American politics to be appealing to rural voters, and Democrats are not. It's possible that this will ebb somewhat without Trump on the ballot, but no one has any great ideas for how to fix this problem otherwise.
The center argument is basically "we should give up certain culture war fights," which seems like a losing strategy and also a compromise of our values. The left argument is basically "leftism will win over rural whites" which...doesn't seem true now, if it ever was.
