A THREAD about PARVO

Soo Tokyo’s tweet blew up and I felt like I should add this for every dog owner

Tokyo was down with parvo at about 3months plus, she didn’t eat anything for two weeks

She lost weight, did nothing but lay on the ground for the whole period

She vomited blood, passed out bloody stools, refused to eat or drink, basically ticked all the boxes of a dog about to die.

Now everyone in my family loves Tokyo and we played our parts, we have a Vet but we didn’t just go dump her at the Vet clinic, we took care of her at home.
As most already know, parvo is a viral infection and it just has to run its course (of about 4-5/6 days)

Palliative care to keep her alive and keep her body fighting was key

I had to pass ORS through her mouth with a syringe every 6hrs as she wouldn’t drink voluntarily.
Our vet also administered vitamins SC through a drip daily, as she wasn’t eating at all.

The bloody stools kept on for a week because the virus had eaten deep into her stomach and intestines.

We would go sit with her, pat her head, pray 😩, basically let her know we were there
She’d make growling sounds, it wasn’t much but atleast it was a response,
We continued giving SC vitamins and antibiotics to prevent a sepsis.

Some things from pharmacy school actually helped

After a while (8/9 days) she started taking little sips of ORS herself
Then the following week she finally accepted mashed canned food we gave her, that was a major win.

Now another complication came in as she was sort of physically deformed Cos she had been laying down on tiles for about 2 weeks.

She also had an abscess of fluids around her body
I called my friend a final year physiotherapy student @papi_anthov to come help with physical therapy and get her standing, we also had to make an incision to drain the excess fluid that were not absorbed by her body

With time she started standing and taking little steps
At this point, Tokyo was very lean but we were glad she was out of danger.
She refused to eat anything asides from canned food and boiled goat meat

Who were we to refuse, we gave her, with time her stool started coming together and the joy in my heart when I saw her solid shit😩
So we pumped her with milk, sardines, fish, dry food, canned food

All of it
How many meals a day?
Basically if we thought she was hungry, we gave her something to eat 😩
We no dey count, just gain weight
Parvo is a bastard

She kept eating, she kept growing.

The Tokyo you see today is a fighter, it’s wasn’t all rosy with cute pictures every now and then, na real work and love 🙂
ORS with a syringe, like 15ml every 6hours at least cannot be overemphasized. They need the fluid!!!

A vet won’t do this for you, do it yourself.

Together with the antibiotics, multivitamins and normal saline.
