How my blog, http://studentofguitar.com gets 4,000 - 6,000 monthly pageviews from Google from a handful of blog posts:

I started this blog in 2019 after taking @RickyAndJim's Income School course on how to build passive income blogs.
My main takeaway from Ricky and Jim's course was that:
You don't need to build links to have SEO success.
In fact, these guys don't build ANY links to their websites and they have had great success as you can see here: https://incomeschool.com/sites/

(At that link, you can see all of the websites they have built, and how much they have made.)
This was a huge revelation to me since I had always burned out in my blogging endeavors thinking that, not only did I have to create great content, I had to build links to it too.

If you've read much SEO content, you've probably heard the same thing:
Great content doesn't matter if it doesn't have any links pointing to it.
Building links is something Brian Dean with @Backlinko really emphasizes.
The reality is that Ricky and Jim and Brian are right!

If you want to rank for higher volume more competitive search times like what Brian Dean does, you probably need to have some links pointing to your content to rank.
But you can also do what Ricky and Jim recommend which is to target lower competition search terms.

For lower competition and lower volume search terms, you have a shot at ranking without any links pointing to your content!

Try searching "guitalele tuning"
You'll probably see my post in spot zero outranking Wikipedia for the same information!

This is amazing because, for a while, I literally had zero backlinks pointing to my website.
But my content (like the guitalele post) was still ranking on page one (and sometimes spot zero) for low volume search terms!
That sid, building this website hasn't been all roses...

For months, I published content and got no traffic to it.
This is just how it works for most brand new blogs.
Plus, my website got hacked!
I had to go through a painful content recovery process and then republish all my posts.
Obviously, getting hacked isn't good for SEO.

I was so discouraged after the hack that I listed it on http://flippa.com to see if anyone would buy it from me.
I forgot about it for a while until someone on Flippa asked me to share Google Analytics access with them.

Once I saw how traffic had been steadily increasing, my faith in SEO was restored!
I removed the listing and have since been adding more content to the blog.
I then used all the SEO lessons from this site and applied them to http://jasminealley.com with some amazing results!

I still have a lot of challenges to overcome with Student of Guitar.
However, I hope anyone that reads this thread knows that you can build a blog that receives search engine traffic without:
- building links
- or having great visuals (Student of Guitar has almost no images)

For anyone building a brand new blog, I recommend focusing on creating spectacular written content for underserved, low-volume search terms.
