Thread/ Here's what gets missed about building individual platforms for dawah purposes #FiqhOfSocialMedia
You're operating in a landscape (social media) that trades in *attention*. In the same way we measure success in this world by wealth, and in the hereafter by deeds - the currency of social media is attention.
Your accountability on individual platforms is to those who give you attention. For you to be successful, you need them to consume, like, share, and comment on your content.
As an example, corporations generaly take stands on social causes based on how it affects their financial bottom line. You could say some are not principally in favor of #BLM but say so because that's what's demandedgenerally
Once you build an individual platform, you are beholden to that audience and lose the freedom to grow intellectually or even change positions. If you change direction (even though it may Islamically be better), you will lose followers and get criticism. That makes it harder to do
Think about that for a second - the larger your individual platform, the *harder* it is for you to grow. How can someone do dawah with that limitation?
This essentially makes the individual a dancing monkey, performing at the whims of the audience. This is when dawah becomes purely entertainment, or in the case of social media - a really horrible soap opera or WWE storyline.
The quickest way to grow individual platforms for dawah is by tearing others down. When that's how you build an audience, you remove the incentive for rectification or reconciliation.
A better approach is to be directly involved and aligned with a larger organization. This puts you under the mission and vision of a larger group. It provides you a peer group that holds you accountable.
Having accountability to an organization, or to scholars in that org provides a check and balance against the ego. The collaboration and close work with others mitigate the need to seek attention from online strangers.
Seeing a rogue Islamic personality with 100k subscribers or a million fans is not something to be impressed by. It's something to be worried about and be cautious of.
